Hi,

Aren't Ringed Plover supposed to be rung above the kneee now like Turnstone ?

Where are you getting that info from Damian?

Hi Kevin,

I received the info in an email from the B.T.O at around Christmas time saying that all Ringed Plover should now be ringed above the knee. I've only caught one since then and this was duly ringed above the knee. Not had a Ringers Bulletin since the email so it may be worth contacting the B.T.O to find out more ?

Damian

Hi Damian,
I've checked that email and I read it as optional "[they] can now be ringed above the knee", as opposed to compulsory. There has been no ammendment to the ringers manual list of ring sizes issued following that email, but I will contact the BTO to clarify the situation.
Hvaing been ringing Ringed Plovers for almost 25 years I have never seen excessive wear.
Thanks,
Kevin.

I unfortunately no longer have the email so apologies if I've read it wrong.I can't see how it would be optional though.Ringing any birds other than by the standard way is done for a good reason, either as a benefit to the bird, the ringing scheme or more often both, so all should be rung either one way or the other.I don't have experience in recapturing Ringed Plover but as you say I can't see them suffering the same ring damage as say Turnstone and Purple Sandpiper.
I would think that recovery rates would drop, certainly from non-ringers. Above knee rings are bad enough to find in the hand !
