Wind beats us

Up and off early to meet up with Andy, a nice morning as 300ft of nets were put up. 4 Reed Bunting caught straight away then the wind got up and game over. On the way home checked some Barn Owl Boxes and ringed a young Female, so all was not lost.

Lrps and Ringed Plovers

LRP Chick by www.grayimages.co.uk

In 2007 over one thousand birdwatchers visited 4450 sites in order to count Little Ringed and Ringed Plovers. The results of their endeavors have just been published. In comparison to the last full survey in 1984 Little Ringed Plovers have risen from approx 620 pairs to 1115 pairs, while Ringed Plovers have dropped from 8617 pairs to 5438 pairs. In addition the fall in Ringed Plovers has not been uniform across the UK - in England they are down 47%, Wales 6%, Scotland 41% and Northern Ireland 66%. Greg Conway, the national organiser, said "Whilst we are delighted that there is good news for Little Ringed Plover, we are really concerned about Ringed Plovers. These birds are an important feature of six of the UK's Special Protection Areas, five in Scotland and one in England, and we need to understand how numbers can be falling so rapidly, despite the protection that they are being given".A summary of the report appears in Jan/Feb BTO News, whilst a full report will appear in Bird Study later in the year.

More Twite news

More news from Dave Sowter, 2 Twite ringed at Flyflats {Warley Moor Reservoir, Halifax} in spring 2008 by me, have been seen down at Dingle Marshes on the beach near Wableswick, Suffolk. Also one of the oldest Twite ringed at Cant Clough between July and December 2003 has been seen . The fact that it is still alive means that it is at least five years old and makes it one of the oldest known surviving Twite. The BTO web site suggests that the oldest is 4 year old. However there have now been several sighting and one capture of a bird ringed at the Duddon Estuary in 2003 when it was already an adult - at least 5 years old when it was caught in this autumn (2008) this November.
thanks to Mr Hugh Venables who spotted these birds Its one thing putting cr-rings on but we need people who take the time to report sightings. all sightings of Colour ringed Twite can be entered on line at
